How to get started with FPV?

Many people think FPV is a hobby they cant afford. There are many people who say you cant get into the hobby for under $1000. Although its generally good to spend more, you can have as much fun on a budget.

What I recommend for starting out is to pickup a RC Transmitter or Radio and play FPV Simulators on your PC until you learn basic flight skills.

Once you have acquired the basic skills for flight, pick up some inexpensive box goggles. Digital is becoming cheaper but Analog still is the least expensive option.

One thing to always keep in mind, equipment that stays on the ground like your radio and goggles are items that wont get destroyed on a crash.

It is ok to start slow, take your time to gather your parts, build your drone and go fly once your good enough in the simulator. I cant say it enough how much simulator time helps… stick time… you need it!

Try Liftoff, DRL Simulator, there are many of them out there…. just use a real rc radio and not something like an xbox controller.

Practicing flying in a simulator can save you lots of money and many hours of rebuilding your drones. The more time you put in the better. Some pilots have over 3000+ hours in simulators and it shows. If your just getting started, I would recommend to have at least 50 hours in a simulator before you try to fly a real drone.

When your just getting started one of the important decisions to make is if you want to build or buy your own drone. Read more here on that. I know its tempting to just buy a big drone and go fly, the problem with that is the larger the drone, the more weight it has and durability comes into play for new pilots.

We recommend starting out with something small. In the micro class of drones. The smaller the drone, the more durable it will be. Most of the time you can smack these things around and they will just keep going. My personal favorite are small toothpick types of drones like my happymodel Crux3 1s elrs. You can find these for $120 and they are very fun to fly.
